Chicago Chorale presents Bach: Passion According to St. John
J.S. Bach's Passion According to St. John presents the Baroque master in his most urgent, most streamlined, most theatrical mode. Fully an hour shorter than his Passion According to St. Matthew, it effectively "cuts to the chase" in its presentation of the Biblical narrative, with dramatic, tension-filled interchanges between characters; emotional outbursts from choir and soloists alike; and heartbreakingly expressive arias, all on a foundation of choruses and chorales which ground the listener in the shared, communal aspect of Bach's art. Our 2013 presentation of this masterwork, supported by a grant from the Elizabeth F. Cheney Foundation, features Steven Soph as the Evangelist and Gerard Sundberg as Jesus, along with soloists Ellen Hargis, Susan Druck, William Bennett, and Paul Tipton, and an orchestra of period instrument specialists led by concertmaster Elizabeth Blumenstock.
A free, pre-concert lecture will be presented by Dr. Martin Marty, Fairfax M. Cone Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus in the Divinity School at the University of Chicago, one hour prior to the performance, in Ida Noyes Hall.
