With foundations in jazz and swing music, Phoebe Hunt, makes an impressive creative leap with this new record. It is the culmination of a five year journey that has taken her from her Austin roots through Music Row, Brooklyn, and even to India to study with seventh-generation master violinist Kala Ramnath. Along the way Phoebe found her voice and delivered her most inspired set of songs to date the soundtrack to her self-discovery.
Shantis Shadow marks an arrival for Phoebe Hunt, whose artistic and personal journey has deep story lines. These masterfully crafted songs are brought to life by the musicians Phoebe has gathered each a virtuoso in their own right. Phoebe is skilled at taking seemingly disparate elements and pulling them together into a dazzling kaleidoscope of lush, coherent sound and rhythm patterns. The result is music that swells, crashes and breathes organically under Phoebes soulful, plaintive voice. Sounds of Americana and Texas Tinged Swing are woven with exotic rhythmic concepts culled from Phoebes time in India.
"Each of us, no matter who we are, has a shadow side, a realm of our being associated in many traditions with the ego or the self... Though what I create may have its roots in my soul, it first has to pass through the filter of my body and ego before it finds a place in the world..." - Phoebe Hunt
The Gatherers Band is comprised of: Dominick Leslie Mandolin/Harmony Vocals, Roy Williams Guitar/Harmony Vocals, Dave Speranza/Jared Engle Upright Bass, Sam Reider Accordion/Keys, and Nick Falk Percussion.
Shantis Shadow - the Transcendent new album by Phoebe Hunt & the Gatherers, deepens the singers roots into Americana songwriting and gypsy jazz. Austin Chronicle
Growing up in the shadows of Chicago, Kingsley was raised to the rhythms of house music. The third eldest daughter of eight, she demonstrated a strong desire to perform and sing from an early age. She sang before she could talk, belting out Disney tunes and performing for family and friends. She joined the choir when she was 8 and taught herself to play guitar and piano. At age 10 she started a band. Inspired by pop music she began writing and producing her own songs.
It seemed she was destined for the stage, but life had other plans. While Kingsley was dreaming of the pop charts, she was also breaking school records in High Jump - track and field. Offered a sports scholarship she went off to college. To keep her love of music alive she took vocal performance classes, but sports, with its relentless demand for success, threatened her dream.
Then as fate would have it, in her third year of college, Kingsley was diagnosed with a competitive heart condition that ended her track and field days forever. Undeterred, and secretly relieved, she was finally free to devote her full attention towards her true passion. She started an all-female a Cappella group, and developed skills in beat boxing and arranging, graduating with a degree in Vocal Performance and Business Administration.
Straight out of college, Kingsley landed in Portland, Oregon and has been honing her skills and working on her first EP. She's quickly made inroads with the local music scene and has been performing around town. Kingsley is currently collaborating with a wide range of people to create her style of pop-inspired music that gives her an authentic platform to launch her songs. She is very excited to share her songs with you this coming fall 2017.
