Inspired by the AIDS quilt and Edgar Lee Masters' Spoon River Anthology, Bill Russell compiled a series of monologues and songs to tell the story of the wide variety of people living with AIDS and its many personal complications. Monologues are delivered by spirits of those whose lives have been literally claimed by the disease, and songs are sung by the living, whose lives have been spiritually claimed by AIDS in a multitude of ways. Elegies... breaks through stereotypes of the AIDS victim and looks at the disease from a human, touching, and often humorous perspective.
