A FRESH TAKE ON SCOTTISH MUSIC
Elias Alexander and the Bywater Band from Boston will play an intimate concert of cutting edge music in the Scottish tradition May 15th, 7:30pm at The National Hotel 211 Broad Street, Nevada City, suggested donation $20-10. Tickets available at the door or at brownpapertickets.com.
Contemporary Celtic music is a living, breathing art form that spans continents and cultures, and Elias Alexander, American-born singer and piper, has found his own expressive and individual voice within the tradition. His music is a testament to the vitality and expressive possibilities of traditional forms, displaying a stunning mix of influences ranging from rock and blues to funk and moments of wild improvisation all contained within acoustic Scottish idioms.
Based in the deeply rooted Boston traditional music scene, Alexander has built a reputation that extends to Scotland, where he was invited to perform at last years Celtic Connections International festival with celebrated Gaelic singer Gillebrìde MacMillan. He has also played numerous festivals in the states, including KVMR Celtic Festival, Grandfather Mountain Highland Games, and Austin Celtic Festival, and shared the stage with other greats such as Alasdair Fraser and Carlos Nuñez. Elias Alexander is also a long time staff member of Alasdair Frasers Sierra Fiddle Camp, and has been featured at the Fiddlers in the Park concerts that follow.
Alexander is touring the West Coast in May with his band, The Bywater Band, to support their self-titled debut album.
An astonishingly tight ensemble reminiscent of Lúnasa or Sólas, the Bywater Band came together in the thriving Boston music community, home to many of the nations best traditional musicians. The album features brilliant instrumental performances by Patrick Bowling (flute, whistle), Kathleen Parks (fiddle), and Eamon Sefton (guitar) in addition to Elias Alexanders border pipes, vocals, and low whistle.
Alexanders compositions are front and center over driving rhythmic backing, played with virtuosic skill and unbridled energy. Having grown up in America, surrounded by such a mix of different cultures and sounds, composing tunes is my way of celebrating those influences and finding my own place within the tradition, he relates.
Instrumentals are interspersed with Elias's soulful singing of original and traditional songs. Even in moments of poignancy, an unmistakable current of joy and freedom runs through every performance. This concert will be an event not to miss.
