When children's interests, abilities, or gender expression are different from what society expects, they are often subjected to discrimination and bullying. How do we support each childs unique potential?
Please join the Holmes PTO for a community screening of National Geographics Gender Revolution, which follows Katie Couric as she explores the complexities of gender identity. Learn more about gender, and terminology, and participate in a discussion about how to support students, families, and our community.
Date: Thursday, February 23
Time: 5:45p Pizza, 6:15p Screening, 7:45p Discussion
5:45p 6:15p Families gather for pizza dinner in cafeteria. Younger children stay in cafeteria for games and fun. Dinner is free and childcare is provided from 6:15p to 8:30p. Please RSVP here for food or childcare so we can have enough pizza and babysitters!
6:15p 7:45p Parents (and with parent permission, older youth) watch documentary in auditorium (90 minutes). To see a preview of the documentary to see if youre comfortable with your kids seeing the film, go here http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/gender-revolution-a-journey-with-katie-couric/
7:45p 8:30p Discussion, "Talking With Kids About Gender" (We hope you can stay for the discussion, but it's ok if you have to leave to get your kids to bed!)
We are asking that families planning on coming for pizza dinner and/or requiring childcare please register for this event.
There will be a resource table available with information about gender, local organizations who can help families, and a selection books you might want to read.
All are welcome!
Thank you to District 97, Illinois Safe Schools Alliance, and many families in our community for supporting this important educational effort.
