Over the past 20 years Vancouver has become recognized internationally as a centre for creative music. On March 23, 24 & 25, 2017, Barking Sphinx Performance Society hosts the fourth annual Improvised Music Meeting, featuring an impressive list of established and emerging members of Vancouvers hotbox of improvisation. Concerts will take place over three evenings: 8pm at Western Front, and 9pm at China Cloud.

As part of 2017 Vancouver Improvised Music Meeting, Barking Sphinx will present Baltimore-based pedal steel guitarist Susan Alcorn, LA-based drummer/percussionist Ted Byrnes and Vancouver-based saxophonist, flutist and clarinetist John Gross in concert with local musicians, Barbara Adler, Aram Bajakian, Meredith Bates, Bill Clark, Peggy Lee, James Merger, Torsten Muller, Paul Plimley, Ron Samworth, Cole Schmidt and Dylan van der Schyff.

On Saturday, March 25, Barking Sphinx will host a public daytime workshop with dancer Barbara Bourget and bassist Torsten Muller at the Western Front.

Experience the unexpected as these phenomenal musicians perform magic over the three nights  from solo sets to duos, trios, quartets and large ensemble works.

Formed in 1998, Barking Sphinx is a collective of exceptional musicians; members of Vancouvers improvised music scene who are well known locally, nationally and internationally  giving our city an international name as a significant centre of contemporary music and musique actuelle. Concerts presented by Barking Sphinx provide the chance to see and hear some of the worlds finest improvising musicians concoct an intoxicating brew of sounds and music.

We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Province of BC through Community Gaming Grants, BC Arts Council, and City of Vancouver.
