NMW Ensemble returns to the Rio Theatre, scene of last year's masterful presentation of Fritz Lang's Metropolis, with a double-feature dose of silent horror cinema accompanied by live, riotous, and beautiful music. Robert Weine's 1919 expressionist horror tale, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, will be screened to the accompaniment of an outrageously, eclectic score by Bay Area-based composer, Richard Marriott. Marriott's music for The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari amplifies the eccentricities and atmospheres of Weine's film and has elicited rave reviews from throughout the U.S., including the New Yorker, Village Voice, the L.A. Times, and virtually every major Bay Area publication.
Paul Hindemith's original musical score for the film Ghosts Before Breakfast by Dadaist filmmaker Hans Richter, was destroyed by the Nazis. This special presentation of the film will be accompanied by Revenge Before Breakfast, a spatial sextet by Pulitzer Prize winning composer Henry Brant. At Land, Maya Deren's 1944 silent film masterpiece will also be shown, accompanied by John Cage's infamously unobtrusive, 4:33. PLUS Promenade in your spectacular attire at the costume contest, accompanied by a live performance of Erik Satie's Furniture Music, with prizes awarded to the best costumes.
