-------------------------------------------------------
The second concert of the Ukiah Symphony Orchestra's 2016-2017 season will be presented Saturday and Sunday, December 3-4, at Mendocino College Center Theatre. Performed under the direction of conductor Les Pfutzenreuter, it features two major compositions: Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 in C Major, Opus 15, with pianist Roy Bogas; and Symphony No. 9 in E minor, "From the New World," Opus 95, by Antonín Dvorak.

Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major, Op. 15, was written in 1796 and 1797 and dedicated to his pupil, the Countess of Bratislava, Anna Louise Barbara Keglevics. The composition features three movements and was first performed in Prague in 1798, with Beethoven playing the piano.

Pianist Roy Bogas received his training in New York and at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. At the age of 19 he became accompanist to Yehudi Menuhin, playing over a hundred concerts with him throughout North and South America. He has also played with many other artists including Zara Nelsova, Ruggiero Ricci, Michael Rabin, Jaime Laredo and Joseph Szigeti, with whom he recorded a number of 20th century works for Mercury Records. In addition to recital work, he has performed as a soloist with virtually every orchestra in California, as well as many other orchestras in this country and abroad. He also performs as a soloist for San Francisco Ballet, both in San Francisco and abroad.

Czech composer Antonín Dvoák (1841-1904) was invited to teach in the United States and yet ended his sojourn early because he missed his native country so much. His stay, however, was notable. Wanting to salute and honor the differences between the old world and new, Dvoák tagged a  subtitle to the symphony he composed while visiting there "From the New World." That subtitle eclipsed the title itself, Symphony No. 9 in E minor, and was an important cultural moment, signaling a recognition that the young country need no longer look to Europe to import its cultural forms, but rather could recognize its own native genius. Although his rhythms remained Czech, Dvoák wove in allusions to American tunes such as "Three Blind Mice" and "Yankee Doodle" as well as to African-American spirituals and Native music.

"From the New World," as it came to be known, premiered at Carnegie Hall in December 1893. It quickly caught on and soon was being performed throughout the U.S. as well as back in Europe. Moments of poignant yearning (the English horn solo from the second movement was later turned into a popular song called "Goin' Home" by Harry Burleigh, an African-American musician whom Dvoák met in New York) alternate with rousing passages that evoke the boisterous energy of the still-young republic.

Performances will be on Saturday, December 3rd at 8 p.m. and Sunday, December 4th at 3 p.m. at Mendocino College Center Theatre. Tickets are available at www.ukiahsymphony.org; Mendocino Book Company in Ukiah; and Mail Center, Etc. in Cloverdale. Prices are $25 for adults; $20 for seniors; and free for children under 18 or those with ASB card. For further information please call the Ukiah Symphony hotline at 707 462-0236.
