POSTPONED! INCAN INSIGHTS with the Del Sol String Quartet, composer Gabriela Lena Frank and Ensemble Chaskinakuy
WE'RE VERY SORRY, BUT THIS PERFORMANCE HAS BEEN POSTPONED.
THE REDWOOD ARTS COUNCIL WILL PRESENT THE CYPRESS STRING QUARTET ON MAY 18TH AT 8PM AT THE OCCIDENTAL CENTER FOR THE ARTS. TICKETS FOR THAT PERFORMANCE CAN BE FOUND ON: World premiere of new music from Grammy award-winning Gabriela Lena Frank's "Tawantisuyu Songbook," written for the combination of string quartet and traditional Latin American instruments, plus traditional Andean music and Latin American-inspired contemporary pieces for string quartet. There will be a discussion with the composer and musicians to follow. Gabi will share her inspiration in creating this new set of works for Del Sol and Chaskinakuy.
"Tawantinsuyu" (in the native Quechua language) means "the four corners of the kingdom" and refers to the entire pre-Columbian empire of the Incas, extending from the Andean Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, the region now comprising the nations of PerĂº, Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile, and Colombia. Drawing on ancient and modern idioms from both the Western and indigenous Latin American musical canons, the "Tawantinsuyu Songbook" creates a true multicultural fusion by welding native Indian performance practices to those of the European classical tradition while preserving the cultural essence of each. Frank's pieces will be performed by various combinations of Del Sol and Chaskinakuy musicians, using the string quartet instruments and a variety of indigenous instrumentsguitars, panpipe and recorder flutes, and various types of drums and percussion. We invite audience members to join in discussions with the composer and performers as we share some wonderful music, food and drinks together. Del Sol and Chaskinakuy will also perform other pieces from their repertoire.
