Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava Lucie Vítková, Accordion Petr Kotik, Conductor
Christian Wolff - individuals, collective (2012) WORLD PREMIERE Lucie Vítková - Accept (2011) AMERICAN PREMIERE John Cage - 103 (1991) NEW YORK PREMIERE with One11 (1992) (film by Cage, realized by Henning Lohner)
The Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava (JPO) performs three pieces never before heard in New York: Cage's last orchestra composition 103, a 90-minute piece for 103 musicians, commissioned by WDR (Cologne, Germany) for his 80th birthday; the world premiere of Christian Wolff's individuals, collective, commissioned by Beyond Cage and composed for the JPO and Kotik; and the U.S. premiere of Czech composer Lucie Vítková's (b. 1985) Accept, for solo accordion, drum set and symphony orchestra.
Cage's black & white 35-mm film One11 was produced and directed by Henning Lohner and Cage in Munich in 1992 to run concurrently with 103.
"John Cage lived his life alertly, vividly, reflectively and sociably, reporting on events for their instructiveness, absurdity and humor. You could say he went the way of the balancing reasonableness and outrageousness of comedy rather than the grimness and ineluctability of tragedy. And then, in the late music especially, a poetic quietness."
Christian Wolff
