Koto/shamisen performer and singer, Yoko Reikano Kimura has concertized around the world based in the US and Japan. For her koto playing, she was touted as beautiful and genuinely talented by Hogaku no Tomo (Japan). The New York Times described her shamisen playing and singing as superb. San Francisco Examiner also praised as, An elegant refined presence perfectly poised, she played with precision, beauty and the utmost confidence. As a frequent soloist, she has concertized in New York, Chicago and other major cities in the US with a wide range of repertoire from classical Japanese music to improvisational pieces.
She has graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts and Music, where she was awarded the top prize for her graduation recital. She continued her studies at the NHK (Japan broadcasting corporation) School for Young Professionals and the Institute of Traditional Japanese Music. Also the Agency of Culture Affairs elected her as the internship trainee. Yoko received her stage name "Reikano" from Hiroko Nakanoshima VI. Her main teachers include Kono Kameyama who is the foremost koto (Yamada school) player in Tokyo area, Akiko Nishigata who is one of the pioneers of contemporary shamisen music performance, and Senko Yamabiko who is a Living National Treasure for Kato-bushi shamisen. Yoko received her stage name Reiko Yamabiko as a Kato-bushi shamisen performer.
Yoko has won numerous awards including the First prize at the prestigious 10th Kenjun Memorial National Koto Competition as the first Yamada school player. She received the First prize at the Great Wall International Music Competition and the Osaka Chinese Counsel Award and won the Japanese music audition for NHK FM radio. She performed at the Kabuki-za in Tokyo for the play, Sukeroku starring Danjuro Ichikawa XII. She has appeared in wide variety of venues in Japan including the National Theatre, National Noh Theatre, Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, Suntory Hall, Hyogo Performing Arts Center and Tofuku-ji temple. She recorded various classical shamisen works for the online music archive, Traditional Music Digital Library. Currently, she holds a teaching position at the Institute of Traditional Japanese Music, an affiliate of Senzoku Gakuen College of Music in Japan.
An enthusiastic supporter of contemporary music, Yoko has premiered new works at the Japan Society for Contemporary Music. Collaboration with classical violinist Yuiko Tomita began in 2000 under the moniker of Ys Sound, and the duo won the Debut Concert Audition at Toppan Hall, Tokyo. This concert was broadcasted nationwide on digital satellite channel. Since 2008, she has concretized with cellist Hikaru Tamaki as Duo YUMENO.
As a koto soloist, in 2013, Yoko premiered 13-stringed koto version of Koto Concerto: Genji composed by Daron Hagen with the Euclid Quartet, and later performed with Ciompi Quartet and Freimann Quartet. In 2015, she performed the chamber orchestra version of the same piece with Urbana-Champaign based Prairie Ensemble under the baton of Kevin Kelly. In 2014, Yoko premiered Kaito Nakahoris Japanese Footbridge for koto and chamber ensemble at Jordan Hall in Boston and in the following year, performed James Nyoraku Schlefers Concertante with Texas Festival Orchestra.
As a shamisen soloist, she performed Shamisen Concerto at the National Olympic Memorial Center in 2004 and performed with the Arianna Quartet in 2012. In 2015, Yoko was invited to perform at Asia Society Texas Center with Houston based chamber ensemble Aperio. In 2016, she performed with American Symphony Orchestra in Pietro Mascagni's opera Iris as shamisen player.
She has performed with many first-rate traditional Japanese performers and collaborated with such artists/musicians as Heiner Goebbels, the Wien Soristen Trio, Kyo-Shin-An Arts, Joseph Robinson, Kenny Endo, Andy Milne among many others. Since 2004, Yoko has toured around the world, performing in such places as Poland, Switzerland, France, Lithuania, Korea, China, Israel, Qatar, Italy, Jamaica, Bolivia, Peru, Brazil, Turkey, Trinidad and Tobago, and England.
