Alba's Edge with Nicole Rabata and Matt Shipman
PRESS RELEASE
On July 27th, the Mayo St Arts Center will host a celebration of Portland's vibrant and innovative Celtic music and dance scene that is not to be missed.
Scottish fiddle, Cuban and Brazilian rhythms, funky bass lines and a healthy dose of jazz harmony and improvisation come together when Neil Pearlman and his groundbreaking band Alba's Edge unveil their new performance set. An innovative Scottish/jazz pianist and Portland Maine native, Neil Pearlman ("A force to be reckoned with"Brian O'Donovan, WGBH), has brought together an unlikely combination of musicians to form a fresh new sound that has been hailed as "a blood pumping delight" by World Music Central and "a wonderful concoction" on BBC Radio Scotland. Co-led by Neil's sister Lilly on the fiddle, the band centers around their dynamic musical relationship, a connection fostered by growing up together in a family steeped in Scottish music and dance. Rounding out the quartet and holding down the grooves that are so distinctive to the band's sound will be Oliver Watkinson on the bass and Jacob Cole on the drums.
Opening the show, representing the Irish side of the music and anchoring it in the traditional medium will be Nicole Rabata and Matt Shipman. Central members of the Portland Celtic music scene, Rabata (Flute) and Shipman (Guitar and Bouzouki) are each well established and respected musicians in their own right. Rabata ("Blithesome, bewitching, incandescent"--Portland Press Herald) has performed throughout the USA, Europe and Asia on the traditional Irish ute. Her teaching and playing has been a vital part of Portland's active folk music scene, inspiring many musicians and delighting audiences time and again. Shipman has been performing traditional music throughout the USA for years, spending the last decade based in Maine. Over those years he has become an indispensable part of the music community, performing with many of the best traditional musicians and bands in Southern Maine.
In addition to the Alba's Edge and Nicole & Matt, the show will feature Scottish dancing by special guest Laura Scott ("a showstopper"--The Boston Globe), who combines the Scottish Highland Dance tradition with improvisation and elements of modern dance.
