Kitka Presents: Diaphonic Singing Intensive Workshop
Kitka vocalists Corinne Sykes and Caitlin Tabancay Austin will team-teach this workshop focusing on diaphonic (two-voice) singing styles from Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Each day of the workshop will begin with vocal and physical exercises to introduce fundamentals of traditional Balkan singing techniques, with special attention given to the practice of singing with others. The exercises will progress into select diaphonic songs from Kitka's repertoire. Since each day of the workshop will cover different material, participants can come to both days or drop in for one. Both workshops will take place from 1-4 PM.
Corinne Sykes has been a member of Kitka since 2010. She has studied the music of Eastern Europe and the Caucasus with folk song masters both domestically and abroad, touring to countries including Bulgaria, Croatia, Georgia, and Armenia. Corinne also studied music and voice at Yale University, during which time she performed with the Yale Women's Slavic Chorus (director 2008-2009). Corinne has been leading vocal workshops in schools and communities since 2006.
Caitlin Tabancay Austin began her classical vocal training in the San Francisco Girls Chorus. At UCLA she sang in the Bulgarian women's choir and received lessons from the choir director, Tzvetanka Varimezova. She graduated from UCLA in 2007 with a B.A. in Music History and a minor in Linguistics. She joined Kitka in 2008. Caitlin continues to study and perform classical, early (pre-Renaissance), folk, and contemporary music with various ensembles and family members. She has written some original music and enjoys playing with instruments.
