In 2012 Islamic extremists banned music in Mali: radio stations destroyed, instruments burned and Malis world famous musicians faced death.
"They Will Have To Kill Us First: Malian music in exile" tells the story of Malis musicians fighting for their right to sing. From the refugee camps to the battlefield to the international stage, it leaps headfirst into a tale of courage in the face of conflict.

River City Cinema, in partnership with Husson University and NESCom, is proud to bring this film and its filmmaker for a special presentation in Bangor. Director Johanna Schwartz will join us for a Q&A following the film.
Johanna Schwartz is an award-winning film-maker who creates thought-provoking documentaries with a profound sense of place and time, and a highly praised natural filming style. Working across the world, with a particular focus on Africa, she has produced and directed films for broadcasters such as BBC, Channel 4 (UK), Channel 5 (UK), Discovery, National Geographic, The History Channel, PBS, CNBC among others. As a director she won Gold at the New York Film and Television Festival and Best Documentary at The Chicago International Movies and Music Festival. They Will Have to Kill us First is her feature length film debut.
