DBCFSN 10th Anniversary Celebration
Ten years ago, in a packed bookstore on Detroit's west side, tens of Black folk gathered to form what later became the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network (DBCFSN).  It was February and it was cold, but that didn't keep people away.  There was a common understanding and mission: we must control our food if we are to control our destiny as a people. Today, DBCFSN operates a seven acre organic farm--D-Town Farm--in the City of Detroits Rouge Park; engages young Detroiters in experiences that teach them about food security and food justice and the value of gardening, healthy eating and exercise through the Food Warriors Youth Development Program; and provides an opportunity for the community to buy cooperatively through the Ujamaa Food Co-op, a monthly buying club that allows members to obtain healthy food at below retail cost.

DBCFSN is also In the planning stages of developing the Detroit Peoples Food Co-op, which will be a full service, cooperatively owned grocery store in Detroits North End. It will include a café, incubator kitchen and community meeting space.

On April 22, DBCFSN will celebrate 10 years of working for food justice and sovereignty in Detroit with a reception and concert performance at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.  The reception begins at 6:00 p.m., followed by a concert with hip-hop and spoken word artist Mama Sol at 8pm.

The 10th anniversary celebration is an opportunity for our network of friends and supporters to revel in the milestones made by DBCFSN, honor a respected member of our community, and enjoy good music.  We want you to participate.  Individual tickets are available at $25.00 and $50.00.  The $25.00 ticket includes the music celebration with Mama Sol and the $50.00 ticket includes both the music celebration and the reception.
