Prior to the 1967 War, Israeli governments rejected the establishment of a television station on the grounds of protecting public morality; transmission started only in 1968. A surprising tradition emerged and even today, IsraelisMizrahi, Palestinian, and Ashkenazistill wax nostalgic for the Friday ritual of watching the weekly Arabic Movie. But did anybody wonder how the official TV station obtained these films, mostly from Egypt, Israels greatest threat?  How were movies made by the enemy shown on the eve of Shabbat?  Often produced in a soap-opera style, these movies brought glamorous stars, music, convoluted plots, and fleeting moments when Israelis relaxed and shared the same cultural heroes as everyone else in the Middle East. While revealing a distinct multicultural aspect of Israeli life, the film also illuminates enduring contradictions in Israeli approaches to Arabic society.  Shabbat Shalom!
