Kitka Presents: Bulgarian Folksinging Workshop with Tzvetanka Varimezova
Tzvetanka Varimezova is Kitka's mentor in Bulgarian folk singing and choral music. Her inspiring, warm, and down-to-earth teaching style makes the "mystery" of Bulgarian vocal music accessible to all.
Born to a musical family in Bulgarian Thrace, Tzvetanka Varimezova has performed as a soloist and assistant conductor with ensembles including the Bulgarian National Radio Choir, National Folk Ensembles Trakija, Bojura, Philip Koutev, Pazardzhik, Les Grand Voix Bulgares, Le Mystére des Voix Bulgares, and Cosmic Voices of Bulgaria. With these ensembles and others, she has toured throughout Europe, Russia, Japan, Latin America, and the USA. Tzvetanka has many recordings and is well-known for her brilliant tone and her breathtaking interpretations of the highly ornamented songs from her native Pazardzhik region. She currently serves on the ethnomusicology faculty of UCLA, where she directs the women's choir Super Devojche.
Tzvetanka will present a lecture and demonstration with Kitka singer Elizabeth Setzer from 1:00 to 1:30. All workshop participants are invited to attend. The workshop itself will begin at 1:45.
