Every year on Good Friday in the Philippines a festival takes place called Penitencia. This festival's roots are deeply interwoven with the colonial legacy of the Philippines, a Spanish colony founded during the Spanish inquisition.
Penitencia attracts international audiences because it is one of the only places in the catholic world where self-flagellation, floggings and Crucifixions are still practiced in an attempt to commiserate with Christ's suffering on the cross.
but what might be the real motivations of these self-flagellating penitents?is there a secular equivalent to this idea of spiritual ecstasy through physical pain?
On Saturday, April 28th, The Fuzzystar Organization aims to investigate these questions. With the help of renown Icelandic sociologist Agust Kjartansson and infamous New York City Dom, Mistress Vera.
We invite you to take part in this real life experiment, hosted by Dr. Kjartansson, to investigate the line between submission and salvation. Bring an Open mind and be ready to question your preconceptions.
