VADO Productions and Center for Traditional Music and Dance present
The Hunter - Le Chasseur, a traditional tale from Ivory Coast presented through dance and drum, song and drama. Featuring the Kotchegna Dance Company, a corps of multi-ethnic NYC dancers specializing in the traditional dances of Ivory Coast, and masters of Ivory Coast performance, The Hunter is riveting and suspenseful.
A young hunter defies the village chief, and goes hunting in the forest on a forbidden day. When forest spirits kidnap him, the village must rescue their wayward son. But how?
Directed by renowned artistic director Vado Diomande, the show will perform in the jewel-like Ailey Citigroup Theater.
Come see West African village life, and how it faces its challenges against dark forces. Come listen to the thrilling drumming of an exceptional corps of drummers led by Trabi Lizie and Boubacar Diabate. Come hear the songs, chants and praise songs of village life with Yahya Kamate, Mamadou Dahoue and others. Come see the awesome masked dances, high on stilts, low to the ground, blessing us, protecting us, making us laugh and wonder. Come see a beautiful array of dances - celebration dances, warrior dances, seasonal dances, initiation dances, honoring dances...joyous, love-of-life dances! And masks! All of village life is expressed through the dynamic and energetic rhythms of the diverse dance and drum culture of Ivory Coast. Every age welcome!
