Local experimental duo and Thrill Jockey recording artists Golden Retriever will debut a new composition accompanied by a 12 piece chamber ensemble on October 20th and 21st at The Old Church in Portland, Oregon.
For seven years now Golden Retriever, the Portland duo of modular synth maestro Matt Carlson and Jonathan Sielaff on bass clarinet, have been exploring every conceivable corner of their unusual combination of instruments, resulting in four critically acclaimed records and several tapes for labels like Thrill Jockey, Root Strata, NNA, and Debacle Records. Last year's "Seer" LP was named one of the 20 Best Avant Albums of 2014 by Rolling Stone.
This year though, they are expanding their sonic palette to bring in classical acoustic timbres, including the Mousai Remix String Quartet with piano, flute, oboe, vibraphone, and organ. With the help of a grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council, they've put together an ensemble of top-notch musicians from Portland's classical, improvisation, and electronic music scenes to debut the new piece alongside them this October at The Old Church in Portland.
At this show Golden Retriever will take their unique concept of highly melodic, texturally dense electro-acoustic chamber music to a new level of ambition and scale to present a piece that will move from meditative ambience to white-hot magnetic peaks, with orchestral timbres merging with electronics into a shimmering, kaleidoscopic mass of sound.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS Golden Retriever is the Portland duo of Matt Carlson (modular synthesizer) and Jonathan Sielaff (bass clarinet), two musicians who blur the line between sounds created electronically and acoustically. The pair formed Golden Retriever in 2008 and began to develop a language informed by the practices of free improvisation as well as the tradition of American experimental electronic composers. Golden Retriever's compositions are inviting and relentlessly listenable, embracing both emotional depth and wild abandon without betraying the hidden framework of complexity within.
