The Rugged / Bow Thayer & Kelly Ravin
THE RUGGED The Rugged began playing a handful of gigs around Maine, and then hunkered down to record a full length album. The resulting self-titled effort, recorded by fellow Waldo County native Ed Goguen is as smart as it is well, rugged, appropriately enough. There's something uniquely Maine about Travis Lloyd's brand of backwoods rock voodoo; smart and defiant, neither flashy or (God forbid) pretentious; well-played, thoughtful and with just enough distortion pedal abandon to get you moving. The blasts of rock on "Big Hearted Woman" are as welcome as the shimmering jangle of "So Wild." It's an uncommonly strong debut both lyrically and musically, one well worth listening to in full.
BOW THAYER & KELLY RAVIN Bow Thayer has been singing and writing songs for as long as he can remember. Making music is who he is. He has lived up to his "reputation as a sublimely gifted artist" by pursuing a creative vision that seeks to lead Americana music into the future. Finally gaining national recognition, American Songwriter Magazine says this "onetime Levon Helm compatriot is the best artist to come from New England in recent years." Having played with such music luminaries as Levon Helm, John Hiatt, Booker T, and Ringo Starr, Bow has seen his fair share of travel across these United States of America and the World at large and plans to do more while supporting his records that feature his tales, truths and fantasies about the human condition.
The transformation of Kelly Ravin has been fascinating to watch. And it might be a revelation to those who know him only as the lanky, inked-up guitar slinger and co-front-man of local outlaw-country-metal band Waylon Speed. When playing solo and stripped of the muscular trappings of Waylon Speed, Ravin lays himself bare. His reedy vocals are raw and aching, the open tones of his reverb-laden guitar echoing uncertainty and hope in equal measures.
