SPIRITS FUNKTOBERFEST
The first annual Funktoberfest will be held on October 24th in the large outdoor space at Spirits Food and Friends in Alexandria, Louisiana. The concert and FIRST area home brewers' beer tasting competition will benefit Tipitina's Foundation "Instruments A Comin'," which donates instruments to local schools.
Music will begin at 2pm with local entertainment, and New Orleans bands Earphunk and supergroup Raw Oyster Cult will be headlining the night. Attendees are encouraged to sample craft brews and vote with their dollars for the "People's Choice" award. Money raised will benefit Tipitina's. The brews will also be professionally judged and a "Top Brewer" will be awarded.
Spirits Food and Friends is a restaurant and live music venue that is a strong supporter of local musicians, and hosts original bands from beyond the city limits. "Music is a key component of our culture here. Creating an event that supports that community just made sense to us," says owner Lee Gwinn. "We wanted something that the community would enjoy, but more importantly, benefit from." Lee also wanted to introduce central Louisiana to the growing trend of home brewing competitions. "Craft beers are also a big part of our thing at Spirits, with many in-house craft beers. Home brewing competitions are very popular around the nation, but we don't have one here locally."
Spirits is proud to partner with Tipitina's Foundation's flagship program, Instruments A Comin' (IAC). To date, the program has contributed more than $2.9 million worth of musical instruments to over 95 music programs throughout the state for Louisiana youth to gain access to quality music education. The program began in New Orleans and expanded to Alexandria in 2006. Locally Instruments A Comin' Alexandria has presented instruments to Bolton High School and Holy Savior Menard High School. Top Flagship sponsors include Spirits Food and Friends, Kinetix, Gotta Groove Entertainment and Cenla Broadcasting (Q93, KRRV, KZMZ).
Tickets and the home brewers application will be available at spiritscenla.com. The festival is still currently open to sponsorship requests. These requests may be made with Lee Gwinn of Spirits at 318.445.4491 or Liz Lowry at 318.290.9349. Attached is the logo for Funktoberfest and Spirits Food and Friends. Spirits is located at 1200 Texas Avenue. Press Conference to announce event will be held at Spirits at 4pm on August 6.
