| Description |
Directed by Tami Yeager (2007, 56 min, Color, DigiBeta, USA) English, Punjabi with English subtitles. In the wake of 9/11, the fear of terrorism shook the nation, resulting in retaliatory attacks on innocent individuals across the country. This powerful documentary scrutinizes one such incident--the murder of Mesa, Arizona resident Balbir Singh Sodhi, a Sikh businessman who was mistaken for an Arab terrorist because of the turban he wore as part of his faith.
A collection of old photographs and in-depth interviews with the victim's brother Rana reveal the hopes and dreams the Sodhi family brought to America, as immigrants eager to start a new life. In this searching account, Tami Yeager documents a family's struggle to come to terms with the senselessness of a killing, resulting in a powerful film that contextualizes a family's grief with the tragic scope of surrounding events.
Special Jury Award Winner, 25th San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival Official Selection, 2007 Slamdance Film Festival
Preceded by SOMEONE ELSE'S WAR (2007, Video, 25 min, USA) Directed by Lee Wang |
