The Upsetter
Red Vic Movie House San Francisco, CA
Dirs. Ethan Higbee, Adam Bhala Lough Jamaica/Switzerland 2011 The Upsetter tells the fascinating story of Lee "Scratch" Perry, a visionary musician from rural Jamaica who journeyed to the big city in the late 1950's with dreams of making it in the burgeoning record industry. Lee Perry burst on the scene with a brand new sound, inventing a genre of music that would be called Reggae while mentoring a young Bob Marley. In the 1970's, his recording studio The Black Ark became a hotbed for the production of Reggae and Dub, and musicians as diverse as The Clash and Paul McCartney called on him to provide his unique sound to their recordings. The Upsetter charts the life of Lee "Scratch" Perry in his own words and is not only a documentation of 30 years of Jamaican music and culture but also a study of a deeply creative and inspiring human being. Narrated by Benicio Del Toro. (95m)
