Chulrua
Chulrua (kool-Roo-ah) translates from the Irish as 'red back,' the name of the favorite wolfhound of the Irish mythic hero Finn MacCool. Chulrua performs the old instrumental music of Ireland, in the words of 'Irish Music News,' 'seeking the beauty and depth of the music... pure and free of any crossover influences.' Concerts and the trio's trio of CDs have evoked such praise as 'Their playing together is stellar; it's like listening to a conversation between old friends' from 'Booston Irish Reporter,''This recording is at once a wakeup call and a reminder of the things that matter in Irish traditional music' from 'Irish Music Magazine' and 'A must for Celtophiles' from 'Dirty Linen.' Chulrua features All-Ireland Button Accordion Champion Paddy O'Brien, who in the course of his 40-year career has over 3,000 tunes at his fingertips and published 'The Paddy O'Brien Tune Collection,' with accompanying CDs, of 500 reels and jigs. Volume 2 of another 500 melodies is due to be released later this year. Paddy is that rare talent that can distill the dreams, tragedy and romance of Ireland and pour them out full measure through his accordion. Chulrua also boasts French-born fiddler Patrick Ourceau, hailed in 'The Irish Voice' as 'among the most accomplished of traditional Irish music's Foreign Legion' and who has been featured on a host of recordings and newest member, Dublin guitarist and singer Eamon O'Leary who has performed in concert and recorded with many irish luminaries. Chulrua's unique concerts includes stories of how the tunes got their names and the musicians who composed or handed down the tunes and songs they play which will transport you to another, finer world.
