DCTV Presents The Minutemen
In 2005, aggravated by the influx of undocumented immigrants and fed up with the lack of government involvement, the Minutemen positioned themselves along the U.S. / Mexico border. Armed, energetic, and bound by common ideals, they are a diverse, often fragmented group of disillusioned freedom fighters led by a modern day Don Quixote "Lil' Dog" and his four legged companion "Freckles".

Zealous and often comical, these subjects exist in what many believe to be the realm of vigilantism. This cinema verite documentary follows nine of these eccentric, self-appointed watchdogs as they fight to regain their sovereignty as well as their own sanity in an isolated and dangerous landscape. Filmed over the course of four years, the motivations of and relationships between these conflicted patriots are examined.

With the new Arizona immigration law raising the public consciousness about border issues, The Minutemen gives insight into the role citizen watchdogs play in influencing government policy. The film will be featured at the upcoming Chicago International Film Festival.

Screening followed by a Q&A with Director/Producer/DP, Corey Wascinski, and Producer/Editor, Nicholas Weissman.

Corey Wascinski is a first generation immigrant from Poland and one of the first in his family with the opportunity for a higher education. While shooting a photo essay on the border, he stumbled upon a character who summed up the struggle of the American nativist against the issues of illegal immigration. Passionate about this issue and intrigued by the politics and lifestyles of movement members, he spent the next three years embedded; covering the phenomenon that is Minutemen. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Nicholas Weissman found his passion for filmmaking at an early age, frequenting the local theater and learning from his parents who worked in the industry. He went on to receive the Academic Achievement Award, Departmental Award, Brooks NPPA Best of Photojournalism Award, and the College Photographer of the Year Award: Pictorial. After college, he moved to New York City where he works as a freelance visual journalist/producer/editor for various media outlets including Time Magazine, Sports Illustrated, People Magazine, MSNBC, PBS, TNT, The History Channel, and Sony Pictures. Wascinski & Weissman both studied visual journalism at Brooks Institute of Photography, and are co-founders of Ugly Dog Productions, a documentary film and television production company based in New York City. The Minutemen is their first independent feature film.
