"The Elephant Man" by Bernard Pomerance

"The Elephant Man" is the true story of a hideously deformed 19th century man, Joseph Merrick, who was rescued from life as a circus freak by a surgeon, Frederick Treves, who reveals Joseph's acute intelligence and romantic imagination. The doctor gradually teaches the Elephant Man to conform to the habits and expectations of Victorian society. And, as Joseph Merrick becomes attached to the social advantages of being a scientific celebrity, the doctor begins to realize what is being destroyed.
