Lucinda McDermott in "O'Keeffe!" April at Hilton Garden Inn Outer Banks, Kitty Hawk NC
O'Keeffe!, a one-woman play written and performed by Lucinda McDermott, explores the artistic and personal struggles of iconic American artist Georgia O'Keeffe. The play follows her as she grapples with the unresolved question that art aficionados continue to debate today: Who is responsible for her success herself or her famous and influential husband, photographer Alfred Stieglitz.
O'Keeffe and Stieglitz maintained a passionate and tempestuous relationship for 30 years. Known as "the father of modern photography," Stieglitz photographed O'Keeffe more than 500 times and was the first to exhibit her work.
Grateful for his initial interest, O'Keeffe soon struggles to maintain her fierce independence in both her life and her art. The play takes us on a journey with O'Keeffe from 1915, when she began developing her own style, through to Stieglitz's death in 1946. The struggle to survive independently within her relationship and to understand her own creative process is part of O'Keeffe's search to answer the question, "Was it me or was it Stieglitz?"
Because this conflict between individualism and a shared life is at the heart of everyone's personal journey, the play is as much about us as it is about O'Keeffe. Lucinda McDermott presents us with an O'Keeffe that is human, witty, and lively. An engrossing drama about the beloved American icon.
"A stirring one-woman play about American art legend Georgia O'Keeffe, written by and starring Lucinda McDermott. You don't have to be an O'Keeffe scholar or art lover to love this play. You just need to be open to exploring a woman's struggle between family and freedom, dedication to spouse and art, and ultimately, commitment to self."
