Olympic Games 2014 Dinner: Four Courses, Four Countries
Celebrate international friendship at our Olympic Games 2014 Dinner! Join the Urban Dinner Socials on Sunday, February 16, with four courses from four countries.
This menu is a tribute to the Olympic Parade of Nations, that powerful and peaceful vision of hundreds of flags and proud young people from all across the globe celebrating their homelands. Our four-course menu showcases four classic yet hard-to-find world cuisines: We're waving the flags of Jamaica, Sri Lanka, Iceland, and Mongolia.
We'll also have a brief presentation on the Olympic Games and human rights - Pondering the Olympics: Constitution Edition, with My Daily Constitution founder Linda Pollack.
Iceland:
Seeded Rúgbrauð (Thunder Bread) with Carrot Gravlax and Mustard Dill Sauce
Mongolia:
Buuz (Savory Steamed Dumplings) with Almond Cabbage Vinaigrette Salad
Jamaica:
Spicy Grilled Jackfruit Jerk with Sweet Plantain and Coconut Rice
Sri Lanka:
Love Cake with Lemon Rind, Cardamom, and Puhul Dosi (Pumpkin Candy)

All menu items are vegan.
Local and organic where possible. Menu is gluten-free with one exception: Our Buuz (Mongolian Dumplings) are wheat-based. All other menu items, including Icelandic Thunder Bread and Sri Lankan Love Cake, are gluten-free.
Produce from Whittier Backyard Farms for this dinner includes cabbage, scallions, carrots, pumpkin, thyme, and chives.

Tickets online are $20-25 and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Alternately, you're invited to join our volunteer kitchen crew: Purchase a volunteer dinner ticket online for $5 (must be purchased 24 hours or more before event). Arrive at the kitchen at 4:30PM on Sunday and we'll show you what to do from there.
A two-course child's menu is available for $7.

Why local? Supporting a neighborhood farm* means eating healthy, pure, sustainably grown food. It also means a reduced carbon footprint, increased independence for our local economy, and reduced reliance on non-local resources.
Why experimental? Vegan and allergen-free cuisine is the new Wild West for food lovers. We are at our happiest when pioneering this cuisine.
*The primary produce supplier for the Urban Dinner Socials is Whittier Backyard Farms, a community-supported local agriculture project in Whittier, CA.
