An Evening with William Kent Krueger and Faith Sullivan
Join us for an exciting and engaging literary evening with authors Faith Sullivan and William Kent Krueger. Zenith Bookstore is thrilled to bring these two Minnesota favorites together to talk about, read from, and sign copies of their new novels.
Best-selling novelist William Kent Krueger's new book, This Tender Land, is the book that Krueger fans have been waiting for the companion novel to Ordinary Grace.
"I've been at work on the manuscript for three years," writes Krueger, "and Im deeply in love with it. Set in southern Minnesota in the summer of 1932, well into the Great Depression, its the story of four orphans running from the law because they've committed a terrible crime, but for the all the right reasons. A manhunt has been launched to capture them, so they cant take to the roads. They're afraid to ride the rails, as everyone was doing in the Depression, because the railroads were patrolled by men called bulls, private police who had a reputation for incredible cruelty. They choose instead to take to the rivers. They canoe a river called the Gilead to the Minnesota River, follow the Minnesota to the Mississippi, and their intent is to canoe the Mississippi all the way to Saint Louis, where they believe they have family and will be safe. I have always wanted to write an updated version of Huckleberry Finn. This is my Huckleberry Finn."
In Ruby & Roland, Faith Sullivan, author of the beloved Good Night, Mr. Wodehouse, brings us a new tale of resilient womanhood in Harvester, Minnesota.
Growing up in early twentieth-century Illinois, Ruby Drake is a happy child. But one winters night, her beloved parents perish in an accident and suddenly, Ruby finds herself penniless and nearly alone in the world. At a historical moment when young women are expected to be focused on courtship and marriage, the industrious, bright Ruby searches for opportunities to expand her horizons at every step.
Ruby & Roland is a story of relationships -- friendship, romance, and the families we are born with and create and of one woman's journey of selfhood on the prairie.
