Finding the Watermark: Threats & Surprising Allies
With World Water Day just around the corner (March 22), join us for a talk by Dr. John Matthews, director of the Freshwater Climate Change program at Conservation International. Hear the latest developments in climate change through the lens of water.

Entitled, "Finding the Watermark: Threats & Surprising Allies," Matthews makes the case for how freshwater is the critical, connecting resource tying sustainable communities, economies, and ecosystems together.

The lecture takes place 7 pm, Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at Mercy Corps Action Center, 28 SW 1st Avenue, Portland, Oregon, 97204.

Tickets are $10.00 ($5 Students) and available at the Action Center or by phone, 503-896-5747, during regular hours and online at Brown Paper Tickets.

"Freshwater is the thread that ties together communities, economies, and ecosystem," says Matthews. "For this lecture, we gather in the same week as World Water Day, when a major high-level international conference of world leaders is convening on water issues in The Hague. There are many challenges around finding ways to manage water sustainably while also helping to alleviate poverty, reduce inequity, and secure ecosystems. Climate change is one of the strongest threats, and one that may be the least understood. However, many positive developments are emerging, and there are some surprising allies in the US, in North America, and abroad."

Dr. John Mathews directs the Freshwater Climate Change program at Conservation International (CI). He is also the co-chair of AGWA (the Alliance for Global Water Adaptation) and adjunct professor at Colorado State University. Trained as an aquatic ecologist at the University of Texas, he supports field programs within CI and has worked with national and international groups on water and climate issues in 25 countries on five continents. His work integrates climate change adaptation policy and science into practical implementation in conservation and economic development.

Dr. Mathews is the co-author for a 2010 report for the World Bank called Flowing Forward in addition to publishing several policy papers for PLoS Biology and various other publications. He also blogs regularly for ClimateChangeWater.org and AdaptionAction.org.

Matthews is a resident of Corvallis, Oregon.
