Oakland Veg Week: Tech Tuesday
Join Oakland Veg and SF Vegans in Tech for wine, cheese, and a panel discussion of cutting-edge new technologies designed to create a more sustainable, humane food system.
Panel will include:
Ron Shigeta (Panelist) Ron Shigeta PhD is the Science Officer at IndieBio where he has helped grow a new generation of food companies. When seen as a system, these companies are helping to rewire the world food ecosystem to be in balance with our environment by removing animals and other expensive components of human food production. Ron's PhD research career includes bioinformatics and genomics, diabetes and biophysics.
Miyoko Schinner (Panelist) Miyoko Schinner is the Founder and CEO of Miyoko's Kitchen, makers of fine vegan cheeses and butter, winner of the VegNews Product of the Year Award and Expo West's Nexty Award. Since its inception in fall 2014, Miyoko's Kitchen products have gained distribution nationwide as well as Canada and Hong Kong. Miyoko is a long time vegan and veteran food developer and chef, and has launched and operated several successful vegan businesses, including a restaurant and another manufacturing company. She has also penned five vegan cookbooks, including Artisan Vegan Cheese and The Homemade Vegan Pantry, and co-hosts Vegan Mashup, a cooking show that airs on PBS nationwide. Most recently, she has carried her passion for a compassionate lifestyle to starting Rancho Compassion, rescuing farmed animals and providing a permanent home for them at her ranch in Nicasio.
Ben Rubert (Panelist) Benjamin Rupert is a volunteer with the Real Vegan Cheese project which aims to produce real milk proteins from yeast making vegan cheese acceptable to everyone. He is also a founding member of the biohacking space Counter Culture Labs. In his day job he is a synthetic chemist who has worked on lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors, organic solar cells, and radiation detectors for nuclear non-proliferation. http://meowdip.heterodoxy.cc/about/
Gilonee d'Origny (Panelist) Gilonne is Development Director at New Harvest, the organization that is building the field of cellular agriculture. She is a lawyer specialized in matters of climate change, sovereignty, and war crimes. She joined New Harvest in 2015 and established the organizations West Coast presence in early 2016. Before New Harvest, Gilonne worked in the private sector, integrating climate and justice in business, finance, media, and banking. For example, she innovated one of the first ever impact bonds at Citigroup (a finance facility for mine action in South East Asia). She co-directed and co-produced Stealing Klimt, a documentary about the restitution of Nazi-stolen art. She developed and ran IMGs corporate responsibility and helped create the companys peace building consulting operation. She has a BA from Brown University and an MA and an LLM from SOAS.
