2nd Annual RISE! Rediscovering the City Through Intercultural Poetry & Arts
Balboa Poet House & the Great Arizona Puppet Theatre present RISE! Rediscovering the City Through Intercultural Poetry & Arts Friday, December 4th from 7-10pm at the Great Arizona Puppet Theatre.
RISE! will feature poets, artists and performers from many different cultures, with a focus on quality writing & performance, as well as a strong cultural message. Phoenix has underrepresented voices from so many backgrounds, and we are determined to bring exposure and inclusion in a sometimes segmented community.
We are proponents of Intercultural Arts, wherein a dialogue is created between individuals of disparate cultures, backgrounds, orientations and experiences. This dialogue is expressed through poetry, music, dance and visual art and creates a space for audience and performers alike to interact with these compelling & complex perspectives.
The Performers of RISE! Poets and Storytellers: Rashaad Thomas Joe Montano III Susanna Velarde Covarrubias Marco Pina Joel Joelskii Salcido JC Koffy Yovani Flores Bojan Louis Melissa Dunmore Tamika Lamb Dancer: Raji Ganesan Musician: DJ Filiangel Morales Live Artist: Edgar Fernandez
We believe in paying artists for work well done. How we accomplish this is with an entry fee and a chance to win wonderful and generously donated prizes by local artists Joseph Sentrock Perez, Mindy Timm, Abe Z, La Muneca, Richard & Michele Bledsoe, Eric Hodgins, Rachelle Olsen and Joe Montano III, as well as the live art created by Edgar Fernandez. Local businesses have also dug deep: The Bookshop, Altered Ego Salon, The Refuge and more.
In addition to compensating the performers, a portion of the dollars garnered will be donated to Phoenix College's Adopt-A-Family program, which assists refugee families settled in Arizona.
Raffle tickets for prizes will be available at the venue. See our Facebook page for more details: www.facebook.com/RISEpoetryevent
Your donation and attendance speak to the need for greater exposure in our arts communities and your desire to engage with them. Support Local Arts!
Refreshments provided by Tres Leches Cafe, serving hand-crafted Spanish Lattes and delicious baked goods. Cash is recommended.
