Muscular contemporary China with its metastasizing cities, staggering economic clout, and relentless modernization is so powerful an international force, it's hard to remember that only 35 years ago, China was a chaotic, closed country of 1 billion people, many of them desperately poor. The single actor most responsible for China's remarkable rise, and thus for today's geopolitical landscape, contends Ezra Vogel, is Deng Xiaoping.
