HEDDA GABLER by Henrik Ibsen, translation by William Archer
Stella Adler called Hedda Gabler the greatest heroine of the stage. Ibsen, in a correspondence sent after finishing the play said, "What I principally wanted to do was to depict human beings, human emotions, and human destinies..." Hedda herself is an "international type", a product of civilization by no means peculiar to Norway, or to a particular era. Women are still pushing against the restraints of their current society, with much passion and resolve, as was Hedda.
