Up & Coming Actors New 10 Minute Play Festival
To give new and established playwrights the opportunity to workshop their ten minute play with the directors and actors of Up & Coming Actors. Playwrights will work closely with directors and actors, they will be able to attend rehearsals and collaborate with the director on shaping their piece. This festival is to help the playwright see what they wrote with an actual workshop production. Actors will be off book and the director will stage the piece. However, the piece does not need to be a final project because this is in fact a workshop production. Audiences will be able to see seven original new works during a fun night of theater.
10 Minute Plays:
"Complex Trauma" by Tatiana Overstreet is about a young woman named Jasmine copes with the recent murder of her best friend (Devan), the injustice surrounding his death forces her to contemplate the unresolved history and continued struggles that plague the black community. Jasmine is forced to decide how this tragedy might shape her as a black woman in America and how she will deal with the systems in society that intentionally create discord among different ethnic groups.
"Forever Hold Your Peace" by Dominique Love is a play about a father (Mark) trying to gain forgiveness from his daughter (Diane), just in time to walk her down the aisle.
"Ballad of the Broke" by Dayquan Moeller is a musical that follows A Homeless Man and a Homeless Woman as they try to convince a Los Angeles tourist to give them money.
"Hope Dosage" by April Brewster is about three women: Jae, Charlie, and Sage, who are struggling to get their band noticed. When Charlie asks for her ex-girlfriend's help, the iconic pop star and former member of Hope Dosage is reintroduced into Jae and Charlie's lives. Kai's new presence calls into question what the female band actually wants to accomplish with their music, as well as their relationships with each other.
"Black Love Matters" by Juanita Overstreet is a play that explores the complexities of the dating world from the perspective of two young African Americans, a male and female. Jade and Brenden agree to go on a blind- date set up by a mutual friend and they are not at all what each other were expecting. We watch as these two challenging one another's perspectives about "black love" in the modern world.
"The Other Princess" by Tahirih Moeller is a Ten Minute Play about a young princess who is trying to make amends. However, she spends most of her time ranting to a tower.
