| Description |
Wednesday 11/18 at 9:30 by JOY KILLS SORROW with special guest SARAH JAROSZ 9:00 doors / 9:30 show (following a free show featuring OPERA BOSTON UNDERGROUND from 7:00 - 8:45) $6 ADVANCE / $10 at the door www.joykillssorrow.com www.sarahjarosz.com
With its bold new brand of acoustic music, Joy Kills Sorrow pushes right through the envelope and out the other side. The Boston-based stringband brings a decidedly modern sensibility to an old-world sound, channeling the prodigious talents of its individual members into elegant arrangements and well-crafted songs. Boasting a full arsenal of original songs, Joy Kills Sorrow plumbs the entire spectrum of its spare instrumentation, effortlessly merging influences as diverse as folk, rock, pop, and jazz.
Newcomer Sarah Jarosz is making BIG waves in the bluegrass community, and it's no wonder. Jarosz (juh-ROSE) has a fine, supple singing voice, occasionally reminiscent of such disparate artists as Natalie Maines, Patty Griffin, and Rickie Lee Jones. She has a deft writing voice, unusually assured and observant in her debut, and it is more than telling that the album's two covers (the Decemberists' "Shankill Butchers" and the Tom Waits/Kathleen Brennan co-write, "Come On Up To The House") fit unobtrusively next to her own eleven songs. And of course she can play: mandolin, clawhammer banjo, guitar, and piano.
