Neil Simon's Fools
Hoban Troubadours are busy rehearsing Fools, a comedy by award-winning playwright Neil Simon, who has made the world laugh with shows including The Odd Couple, The Last of the Red Hot Lovers and Lost in Yonkers. Simon is hailed as one of the best comedic writers of the 20th century. He began his career writing for the early television comedy shows. He won Tony Awards for The Odd Couple, Biloxi Blues and Lost in Yonkers, for which he was also awarded a Pulitzer Prize. Simon is a recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor and the Kennedy Center Honors.
The play takes place in an idyllic Russian village cursed with chronic stupidity for 200 years. When the new schoolmaster, Leon Tolchinsky, arrives, he finds the villagers sweeping dust back into their houses and milking the village cow upside down. He falls in love with a girl so stupid that she has just learned to sit down. But he must educate her in 24 hours to break the curse or face forever the same fate of foolishness as the rest of the village idiots. But love and a little ingenuity prevail for Leon, who learns that the heart has a mind of its own.
Fools by Neil Simon is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.
