Veterans In Performing Arts (VIPA) will present Neil Simon's poignant comedy "Biloxi Blues" as the first show of its season in Portsmouth, NH. October 24 through November 2, 2014 at West End Studio Theatre (WEST), 959 Islington St.
"Biloxi Blues" is based on the author's alternately harrowing and hilarious experiences as a young recruit in US Army Basic Training. His alter ego, "Eugene Jerome", with bunk mates who run the gamut from the brave to the bigoted, tries to survive basic training with the Drill Sergeant from Hell prior to shipping out to the battles of WWII.
"Biloxi Blues" was Neil Simon's biggest Broadway hit in years when it premiered in 1985, winning that year's Tony Award for Best Play, and was adapted successfully into a film directed by Mike Nichols. The New York Times said "Simon's joyous and unexpectedly rewarding new comedy... is his most serious effort to date not to mention his funniest."
Jonathan Rockwood Hoar, Artistic Director of Veterans In Performing Arts (VIPA) says, "This not-for-profit organization has a mission to integrate Veterans from all branches of the U.S. Military into the many aspects of the performing arts both on and off stage. We also welcome guest performers, artists and crew to participate in our goal of providing high quality performances. 'Biloxi Blues' is an uplifting play about the beginning weeks of life in the military and a perfect fit for our Portsmouth premier."

Performances are Fridays, October 24 and 31 at 8:00 PM
Saturdays, October 25 and November 1 at 8:00 pm
Sunday matinees, October 26 and November 2 at 2:00 pm
