Esther Friedman: My Five Years in a Cult: Take 2
Our sold out audience last spring was riveted when Esther shared Part 1 of her story; in fact, we ran over time and had to leave some audience questions unanswered. It felt to me like the room could have talked with her for hours. Friday November 7, Esther is back to continue her compelling story, this time integrated with songs, reflections, and a legal update from one of the largest law firms in the world which assisted her pro bono since we last saw her. For those of you who may not know, Esther is a professional singer-songwriter, and is now integrating songs from this period into her presentation- a kind of "soundtrack" to the whole experience. Last year's audience had a number of questions and we didn't have time to address them all; therefore, Esther and I have planned a Q & A format that will allow us to stay focused and respond to more audience inquiries. And I promise this time will be as compelling as last if not even more so.

"I often think to myself that I must be crazy; why else would I make this confession public. I am compelled to share it, so I do. I guess I do so out of the need to understand this phenomenon called "cults"; how intelligent people get sucked in, why they stay, how cults work, how an ideological and converting group can insidiously endanger society. At the ripe age of 40, I was sucked into a "discussion" group that turned out to be a cult. I want to dispel some myths, to educate and to expose deceptive practices. I feel compelled to shed light and liberate my classmates. I feel compelled to warn that this secretive group is out recruiting new inductees on Boston-area college campuses, coffeeshops, grocery stores, bars, libraries. The more people who are aware and talking about it, the more exposed they will be, and less able to rope people in with its 'clever insincerity'. "
When most people think of cults, they envision the Hare Krishnas dancing in robes and selling flowers at the airport. Those of us who are a wee bit older, recall Charles Manson, the grisly murder of Sharon Tate (inspired, Manson claims, by the Beatles song Helter Skelter). Who can forget the Branch Dividians, Jim Jones of "drank the Kool Aid" fame, Heaven's Gate, or creepy Warren Jeffs and his YFZ ranch.
My cultic experiences don't echo these extreme events; it was more insidious, more deceptive and alluring..."
