Uncovering Options for Teens and Young Adults on the Path to Higher Learning
You should attend this event if you
are a teen or young adult or a parent of one
believe young adulthood is relevant and can be fulfilling
want to know how to invest in your teen and young adult years
want to be fully prepared for a meaningful college experience

Presenters: Wes Beach and Rheanna LaRoche

Wes will explain how it's possible to spend the "high school" years in very nontraditional ways, ways that allow teens' experiences to be at least to some extent self-directed, and thus fulfilling and productive. Gaining admission to colleges is entirely possible after unusual preparation, as stories Wes will share will illustrate.

Rheanna knows the college experience and the following job search will depend on more than high SAT scores and GPA. She will share ways in which Option Explore's free program can help your teens and young adults tap into their unique strengths, passions, and talents, through short term job shadowing. She'll explain not only the what and how that Option Explore clients experience, but also the why. Exploring real profession and trades will make your college experience a better investment.
The high school years are not a blurring race to a finish line but rather a broad, fulfilling learning experience, a time of self-discovery and transformation.

COLLEGE PREPARATION IS MORE THAN A SCORE

Wes Beach has 53 years' experience in education. He spent 32 years in public and private schools as a teacher in grades K-14 and as the director of alternative education programs. In 1993 he wised up and left the public schools. He is currently Director of Beach High School, a private high school consisting of a home office and an attitude that offers a wide variety of alternatives to traditional schooling. More than 1,460 people have graduated from BHS without a traditional high school education and have succeeded in a wide variety of endeavors, including but not limited to reaching the highest levels of formal education.

Wes is an outside consultant for the Davidson Institute for Talent Development. He has served on the board of the HomeSchool Association of California (HSC) and is at present the Teen Adviser for both HSC and the Gifted Homeschoolers Forum (GHF). In 2005 he received a Distinguished Service Award from the California Association for the Gifted. In 2012 GHF published Wes's book, Forging Paths: Beyond Traditional Schooling, and in 2015 will publish his second book. He is regular contributor to The Homeschooler magazine.

Wes lives with his wife and two cats in Soquel, California, two miles from the waters of Monterey Bay.

Rheanna LaRoche holds a BA in Architectural Design from the University of Houston. She has practiced commercial and residential architecture for 26 years, for the last 7 years as partner with 2 x Design Architecture in San Francisco. Rheanna is mother and stepmother to 5 children ranging in age from 16 to 33. It was her role as a parent that led her to begin to look at the challenges that face young adults in their transition from teen to adulthood. This calling eventually led her to found Option Explore. It is her hope that Option Explore will empower young adults to envision an alternative path to success.
