Vibes From The Tribe Featuring Phil Ranelin
Trombonist Phil Ranelin is on a year-long 75th birthday tour. Most significantly, at Trinosophes he'll be reuniting with two original members of his 1977 Detroit quartet, Vibes From the Tribe: pianist Rod Williams, and bassist Jaribu Shahid. For this special engagement, current local favorite Djallo Djakate fills-in for Tani Tabal on drums. This is a long-awaited reunion of Phil Ranelin & Vibes From The Tribe- a band that, while short-lived, shared bills with the likes of Les McCann & McCoy Tyner. The band name, Vibes From The Tribe, was a result of Ranelin's classic Tribe release Vibes From The Tribe. That record, which was Tribe's second to last, had just came out and Ranelin decided to form a quartet to promote it. The album Vibes From The Tribe has since become a collector's item among crate diggers, DJs, and vinyl enthusiasts, and in 2001 Hefty Records reissued the Vibes From The Tribe session in it entirety, and other Tribe titles have been subsequently released.
In the late 1960s and early '70s Ranelin was active as a tour and studio musician with Motown records, working with Smoky Robinson & the Miracles, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder & The Four Tops among others. The Trinosophes performances will be the first time the now California-based Ranelin has returned to Detroit since 2005, when he toured supporting his release Inspiration (featuring special guest Pharaoh Sanders) and one of just a few local appearances in recent decades. Ranelin is currently in the final stages of completing his first DVD All Blue and also has a forthcoming project with hip hop artist Madlib!
