Science is showing how resilience, or the emotional ability to achieve a positive outcome in the face of traumatic stress and adversity, can be promoted in an individual. Children that exhibit resilience come from families and communities that work together to demonstrate caring and support, hold high expectations, and encourage children to develop confidence and problem solving skills by providing multiple opportunities for making good choices and being responsible. Everyone within a community-from bus drivers to sheriff's deputies, pastors to store clerks, community leaders and business owners benefits when children and families are healthy, safe and productive. Teri Barila is a nationally known speaker with the Children's Resilience Initiative in Walla Walla, Washington. She will provide information and ideas on how communities can link existing resources to create a culture of empathy, awareness and action. She will lead participants through activities that support the integration of isolated community programs and practices into a community-wide approach to reducing adversity and trauma in children. Participants will leave with a greater understanding of the life-long effects of childhood trauma, and practical ways to address the social and health costs of trauma through increased community capacity. A community resource center will be available, with free handouts and information for participants. Bring some to share! Morning coffee and a lively Networking lunch is included in the registration cost.
