Texas has the lowest political and civil involvement among citizens of any state in the nation. Those Texans that are politically active are almost exclusively members of the Religious Right; their goal to encode their personal religious beliefs into the laws of the state.
Anybody paying attention to the news over the last few years knows that the Religious Right has been highly successful in Texas:
- Reproductive health services are at the lowest level of accessibility in Texas since Roe v. Wade. - Almost three-quarters of Texas voters (which should not be confused with three-quarters of Texans) have voted to encode into our constitution discrimination against homosexual couples. - City governments blatantly endorse the religious beliefs of elected officials by holding prayer events and sponsoring bible study with public money. - Our politicians hold prayer rallies to beg their gods to fix the problems of the state instead of sitting down to do the actual work of our government. - Abstinence-until-marriage sex education in Texas has led us to have the third highest teen pregnancy rate in the nation, the highest rate of repeat teen pregnancies and some of the highest risk sexual behavior among teens. - And it doesn't stop there. Every session bills are proposed in the state legislature to undermine science education, breakdown the wall of separation between state and church and provide ever more privilege to Christians in Texas, at the expense of secular citizens. Texas is seen as a wild successes of the Religious Right.
Join us as we start the process of ensuring that the secular voice will be heard and respected in Texas.
