Southland {this is what i know about love}
Currently housed in Seattle, WA, The Royal Society is a group of interdisciplinary artists making and performing work based in the collective belief that the arts are essential for a healthy, well functioning world. We are tremendously excited to be in process with our current work: Southland {this is what i know about love}, a show presented as an interactive installation incorporating new original choreography, scoring, and texts. Southland is a piece born out of cumulative reflections on love, place, time, and the intrinsic self. The body of the piece originated from a series of texts by The Royal Society co-founder Lylli Meredith, examining how her childhood in the South and subsequent departures, arrivals, and study of love shaped her own ideas about the stories we tell by way of defining self, belonging, and the principles we choose in our navigation of life. A collaborative effort of the last six months, Southland has become a collective rumination on how memory acts as a means of mythologizing our past, thereby offering up a reflection of what we hold as essential to our deepest selves. The Royal Society is interested in, and committed to making work that can be experienced in an intimate and tactile way, creating an open dialogue between performers and audience. We believe this work is relevant to the themes we are witnessing around us in the world- of defining the self in order to be better able to build functional relationships, and find freedom.
