The Clay Canvas with Sarah Gregory
Sarah Gregory is a studio potter who lives and works in the East Bay. She has been an active member of the Berkeley Potters Guild for 17 years. She received her BFA in ceramics and sculpture from The California College of Arts and Crafts in 1991. Her work has appeared in numerous publications including Via Magazine and Lark Books' 500 Vases. She has been a presenter for the Potters Council and has shown in various exhibitions throughout California including most recently the California Clay Competition where she received the Quyle Kilns award for functional work. Her vases focus on form, composition and rich, subtle color. Her vessels act as both container and canvas so that each piece becomes an exploration of the marriage of form and surface. Sarah's luscious surface decoration finds inspiration in the exquisite beauty of the natural world. She delights in observing and interpreting flowers and plants and lets her intuition guide the composition on each individual vase. Color, form, craftsmanship and beauty are all at the core of her work. Join Sarah as she shares her tips and techniques for underglaze painting. We will explore commercial and custom mixed underglazes, application methods including brushing and using an underglaze pen, layering for depth, creating shadows and highlights and transitioning from one color to another. You can bring source material you are interested in working from including photos, drawings and physical objects or work from your imagination. You are also welcome to bring your own bisque work to work on or use commercial tile that will be available.
