Engaging the Core: Slow and Slinky In this workshop, we will deepen our slow, ooey-gooey moves to achieve that slinky, sultry, intoxication look and feel of Tribal Bellydance. Drawing from yoga, pilates, feldenkrais, and Deb's personal 'stash", the warm up of this workshop will focus on core integration, spinal articulation, and building the foundational strength and flexibility in the hips, spine, and shoulders to directly support controlled, snake-like dancing; create 'floating upper body' dance posture for stage; and engage in healthy back-bending and lay-backs to save your low back. All this will be applied to slow and sultry belly dance technique, shapes, posturing, and juicy fusion combos. She has often been coined the 'Queen of slink". Come learn Deb's unique tribal stylization.
Get your Glitch On! This workshop focuses on pops, locks, ticks, tocks, and glitch. Pulling both from belly dance and hip hop, we will break down isolations and build them back up, exploring the balance between sharp hits and controlled fluidity in your dancing. Class includes technique, drills, and combos inspired by the heart of the San Francisco Tribal Fusion scene in which Deb lives and dances. **featuring music selections from some of the leading dub and electronica dj artists!
Sunday, July 6
Dance Therapeutics: Saving your Bellydance Body: Upper Body In this workshop, we will focus on upper spine, ribs, shoulders, neck, and side body. Drawing from Yoga Therapy, Traditional Thai-Yoga Massage, Anusara Yoga, Viniyoga practices, Somatic education, partner yoga, and Deb's personal stash, we will focus on creating more space and flexibility in the upper body, spine, and shoulders to directly support your belly dancing posture, arms, isolations, flexibility, and articulation of movement in order to create slinkier, more controlled slow movements; as well as tried-and-true therapeutic practices for neck/shoulder injuries, muscle tightness, and 'cool down'. All of this will be directly applied to belly dance technique and stylization.
Dance Therapeutics: Saving your Bellydance Body: Lower Body Drawing from Yoga therapy, Traditional Thai-Yoga Massage, Feldenkrais, Somatic education, partner yoga, and Deb's personal "stash" of dance therapeutics, this workshop will deeply and safely help you increase spinal articulation, release the low back, hips, gluts, sacrum, and legs; dramatically increase ability for belly dance isolations and layering, and give you lasting tools for your own personal practice and dancer self-care. All of this will be applied to tribal fusion belly dance. A therapeutic daily series will be given for low back/hips. Guaranteed to radically alter your core strength and flexibility, and directly support your belly dancing.
Deb's bio:
Deb Rubin is an internationally sought-after Tribal Fusion Belly Dance Artist, Holistic Health Counselor, Integrative Bodyworker, and yogi based in San Francisco, CA--the mecca of where tribal fusion began.
Combining ancient Middle Eastern rhythms and desert gypsy soul with contemporary dance and music influences such as breakbeats, glitch, jazz, modern, & hip hop, Deb draws inspiration from her teachers, her students, and all of the artists, dancers, musicians, circus freaks, and designers in her San Francisco community and across the globe whom she has met on this dance journey. Her vintage-inspired aesthetic whispers remnants of vaudevillian era and speakeasy sass, while her innovative fusion and classic technique transport audiences.
Deb teaches and performs nationally and internationally, sharing her yogic approach and unique stylization of this art form. She is honored to have collaborated and shared the stage with the musical talents of: Balkan Beat Box, Beats Antique, Brass Menazeri Balkan Brass Band, Fishtank Ensemble, Lynx & Janover, EOTO, Vibesquad, Zilla, Tina Malia, Hot Buttered Rum, Hamsa Lila, UltraGypsy Dance Theater, Urban Tribal Dance co, and more. Her solid foundation of Tribal Fusion was seeded through her 5 years in UltraGypsy Belly Dance Theater, and as a regular sub for Jill Parker's classes, who is known by many as the mama of modern tribal fusion, and known by Deb as the muse who inspired her to begin studying belly dance. Deb is also extremely influenced by her teacher, Rachel Brice, whom she was honored to assist at Tribal Massive 2008, and with whom she continues to study. Deb's dance is also heavily influenced by her long-term extensive studies with Mardi Love, Zoe Jakes, Heather Stants, Suhaila Salimpour, and her continued learnings from Cera Byer, Aubre Hill, Kami Liddle, Mira Betz, Amy Sigil, and Jamila Salimpour. Basically, Deb is a sponge for learning, and loves to soak up inspiration and artistry from both the beauty around her, and the process within her.
Deb is also the creatrix of SF Mecca Immersion and SattyaBody Healing Arts & Dance. She produces retreats and workshop intensives that fuse tribal fusion belly dance, yoga, women's health, and organic living. Her writings are published in Yoga Journal Magazine, and she has a bodywork and yoga private practice in Oakland, CA, specializing in dance therapeutics, and injury rehab for dancers.
