Forgotten Chicago West Side Bus Tour
The complex and critical role Chicago's West Side played in the growth and development of Chicago since the nineteenth century will be explored in a Forgotten Chicago bus tour on Sunday, April 27. We will discuss how Chicago's Jewish community built a vibrant system of local institutions, businesses and houses of worship that were influential far beyond Chicago. We will also explore the changes to the West Side since World War II, and examine the remnants of this area, such as the Madison and Pulaski (formerly Crawford) shopping district, which will include a drive past the former Goldblatt's building and O'Connor & Goldberg shoe store, both of which remain standing but altered today.
Using our trusty yellow school bus (for added maneuverability and to keep costs down), we'll also cruise past Chicago institutions such as Sears, Allstate Insurance, Hull House, WLS radio and the University of Illinois at Chicago. We will also visit other aspects rarely discussed during Chicago tours, including urban renewal, construction of the area expressway system, public housing, municipal parking garages, and overlooked modernist landmarks.
The West Side's changing identity will be discussed and explored, including the 19-year struggle to change Crawford Avenue to Pulaski Road.
We look forward to sharing and discussing the more than sixty sites on this tour, and we hope you'll join us for this unique look at one of Chicago's most fascinating areas.
