The National Writers Union (UAW Local 1981) is the only labor union representing freelance writers in every genre. The NWU works to advance economic and working conditions of writers -- lobbying for legislation, initiating lawsuits, educating writers on their rights, networking, organizing picket lines, publicizing viable alternatives to unfair practices by both the traditional and Internet publishers, and by mobilizing members to fight for their collective self-interest.

Event

Writing Across Borders 2014
Featuring award winning journalist/book authors
Gina Apostol, Mirta Ojito & Colin Channer

The National Writers Union invites you to take part in the 2nd annual International Writers Conference, WRITING ACROSS BORDERS, Sunday, May 18, 2014, to be held at University Settlement, 184 Eldridge St., Manhattan on the lower east side.

Writers from around the world living in the greater New York area will discuss writing about migration, identity and justice for immigrants. We are inviting young undocumented authors who write about their experiences as "illegals." We are bringing together comics to talk about how a joke's meaning changes when told across ethnic or religious boundaries. And we are celebrating the creativity, passion, and courage of writers who cross borders in their quest for justice and a fruitful life.

Authors will have opportunities to sign and sell their books following their panel discussions. The day will end with a cocktail party and celebration of writers who forge their identities across borders and in new cultures.
