Alive & Free Conference 2014
The Street Soldiers National Consortium is a group of professionals and organizations dedicated to preventing violence by using and promoting the violence prevention model developed by the Omega Boys Club/ Street Soldiers in San Francisco, California. Founded in September 2004, the mission of the Consortium is to keep young people alive (unharmed by violence) and free (from incarceration) by promoting the understanding and adoption of this model. The founder and President of the Consortium is Joseph E. Marshall, Jr. PhD, co-founder and Executive Director of the Omega Boys Club/Street Soldiers. Roderick Stevenson, Executive Director of Futures, Inc. was a founding member of the Street Soldiers National Consortium.
The Street Soldiers violence prevention model views violence from a public health perspective and: frames violence at the community and individual level as treatable and avoidable; identifies specific precursors of violence as avoidable; identifies young people including perpetrators of violence as victims of the disease of violence rather than as "bad" people, while at the same time placing responsibility to reduce the risk of violence on the individuals themselves; and provides specific methods and techniques for individuals and organizations to prevent violence in themselves and in their communities.
Each conference has three goals: 1.To teach and train individuals some of the skills and knowledge used in Street Soldiers programs to prevent and intervene in violence and to rehabilitate people involved in violence. Specifically, participants would learn about the type of thinking that triggers violent behavior and the risk factors associated with violence.
2.To inspire participants to feel more committed to eliminating violence within themselves and their communities. This is the definition of a Street Soldier.
3.To inspire participants to want to help the Alive and Free Movement spread across their communities and across the country in order to eliminate violence.
